Description

This summer, Human Nature Contemporary Ballet unveils its latest full-length production, Amor Fati, a bold and deeply personal exploration of pain, transformation, and the art of embracing fate. Created and directed by choreographer Rafael Chavez, this powerful evening of dance will take place July 26–27 at the Black Box Theater in Las Cruces, NM.

Rooted in the Latin phrase meaning “love of fate,” Amor Fati confronts the truth that greatness often walks hand in hand with suffering. It asks us to look at what we’ve endured—and who we’ve become—when we emerge on the other side.

The program features two original works by Chavez: Infra dives into the hidden traumas of the Mexican-American borderlands, tracing stories of deportation, femicide, and systemic erasure. With powerful physicality and stark imagery, the work draws haunting parallels to early signs of genocidal violence, compelling us to witness what is so often overlooked.Un Millón de Primaveras, inspired by the ballad of the same name by Mexican icon Joan Sebastian, navigates the complexities of grief through a lush, emotionally layered lens. Set to a reimagined score of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the piece follows a journey from despair to the fragile hope of rebirth.

For choreographer Rafael Chavez, Amor Fati is more than a performance—it is personal testimony. “Nina Simone once said an artist’s duty is to reflect the times,” says Chavez. “To watch Amor Fati is to see all of me—my reality, my fears, and the undying hope for a better tomorrow.”

Blending contemporary ballet with visceral storytelling, Amor Fati is a stunning embodiment of art’s power to bear witness, to heal, and to transform. It is a confession and a surrender to what cannot be changed and what must be felt.
