Description

David Lindsay-Abaire's 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Rabbit Hole," directed by No Strings Theatre Company's Artistic Director, Ceil Herman, opens Friday, February 26 and runs through Sunday, March 14 at the Black Box Theatre, 430 N. Downtown Mall in Las Cruces.

"Rabbit Hole" delves into a couple's lives eight months after the death of their child in an automobile accident in front of their home in Larchmont, New York.

With instinctual tenderness, Lindsay-Abaire, who describes his plays as centering around "outsiders in search of clarity," guides his characters with sensitivity and humor to a place of solace and understanding of each other and themselves..In dealing with the ways that family members survive major loss, the play includes comedy as well as drama. Ben Brantley in his review in the New York Times, applauded the play's "meticulously mapped empathy" and "honesty, accuracy, and humor. "

"Rabbit Hole" was first produced in New York in 2006 where it received rave reviews. Cynthia Nixon, who played Becca, the mother, won a Tony Award (2006) for "Best Actress in a Play" for her performance in the New York production, and the play was nominated for several other Tony awards. Subsequently it has been produced in many regional theatres throughout the country. A film of the play, with screenplay by Lindsay-Abaire, will be released this year with Nicole Kidman playing the role of Becca.

The NSTC production stars Heather Castillo, Corey Dlask, Amy Lanasa, Victor Urbina, and Nikka Ziemer. Interestingly, two of the actors, Lanasa as Becca, who is a playwright herself (one of her plays, "Buy Five Get One Free," was produced at the Black Box Theatre in 2008) and Urbina, playing Jason, knew "Rabbit Hole" from teaching it and studying it, respectively, in university classes prior to their acting in it. "It was very exciting to work with actors who had already spent such significant time thinking about this play prior to starting to rehearse it" said director Herman. Scenic and Lighting Design is by Peter Herman and Costume design by Cortney Newtson. The Assistant Director is Rorie Measure, Sound Engineer is Don McCoy, and Danny Wade is Board Operator for the production.
