Description

"Clarence Darrow" written by David Rintels, directed by larrychandler and performed by PJ Waggaman will be performed at the Black Box Theatre, 430 N Main Street in Las Cruces on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 pm. Clarence Seward Darrow was an American lawyer, leading member of the American Civil Liberties Union and prominent advocate for Georgist economic reform. Called "a sophisticated country lawyer" he remains notable for his wit, which marked him as one of the famous American lawyers and civil libertarians. The play, "Clarence Darrow," is the story of this famous attorney reminiscing over his long and renowned career including the "Monkey" trial and the sensational Leopold and Loeb case. Darrow reviews much of America's legal history with salty humor, courtroom gusto and human relish. His private life and many contemporary events including labor conditions, are woven into this story of a man who accepted unpopular cases and defended unpopular causes. This champion of dissenters and underdogs was also a writer and lecturer and he conjures up many famous people of his life and times.

Well-known actor, P.J. Waggaman recreates the life of this colorful historical figure. He has acted for over 30 years and worked with Al Pacino in "Scarface," John Goodman in "The Babe" and Helen Mirren in "Love Ranch." He has also performed in over 40 plays including "Mary Poppins," "Sound of Music" and "Fiddler on the Roof" at the UTEP Dinner Theatre. At The Black Box Theatre, he has been seen in "Bob: A Life in Five Acts," "Nickel and Dimed" and "The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane."

Director larrychandler is an international director with degrees in theatre from Weber State University and University of Utah and is a retired Department of Army Civilian Theatre/Entertainment director. He has directed/produced (both professional and amateur) over 300 stage productions.
